Wild Things

“And now,” cried Max, “let the wild rumpus start!”

Here is a great sentence to kick-off Superbowl Sunday! Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are has endured for more than 40 years as a favorite children’s book for both its fanciful drawings and its wonderful words. Websters defines rumpus as “noisy commotion” but I think rumpus implies a lot more fun than your average commotion. The rumpus we see after this sentence is three wordless pages with Max and the monsters howling at the moon, swinging from tree branches and dancing together (kind of like football).

After this, Max sails home to his bedroom “back over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day” which sounds how my kids view time. What are your favorite books to read to the children in your lives?
