Short Elevator Speeches Take More Time

“If you want me to give you a two-hour presentation, I am ready today.  If you want only a five-minute speech, it will take me two weeks to prepare.”

Most agree Mark Twain said this – yet other speakers (Churchill) had similar quotes about brevity being the soul of wit.  I’ve been smiling at the truth of this since I’ve recently been writing short demo, or explainer, video scripts.   Shorter is harder!  These “shorts” are like an elevator speech, only in video.  Are you prepared to describe what your business does in 60 seconds?  Not easy.

Yet, it’s essential to describe your USP (Unique Selling Proposition) quickly in this fast paced world.  And that takes editing, distilling, and reducing down to the core elements.  It can be painful to eliminate – and yet it forces clearer communication.

I’m happy to see all the new entrepreneurs in this uncertain economy – so concise is a good lesson to learn for survival.
