McEwan’s Migraine Creature

“There were illuminated points in her vision, little pinpricks, as though the worn fabric of the visible world was being held up against a far brighter light.”

Emily Tallis withdraws to her dark bedroom when she feels another migraine coming in Ian McEwan’s Atonement. McEwan describes the growing pain as a curled and sleeping animal which she tries not to wake. He uses vibrant and sensual sentences throughout chapter six to weave the mother’s pain with the action she hears taking place in her household.

What would make you re-read a book when you already know how it turns out? Luscious writing. That’s what I loved about Atonement. I stopped several times in the book in awe of the writing. What books have you wanted to start over again after the last page?
